On the ground, while many airlines and airports test biometric programs here and there, Delta Air Lines debuted what it claims is the first biometric terminal in Terminal F at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Passengers flying to international destinations on Delta, Aeromexico, Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic out of that terminal may now use facial recognition technology from the curb to the gate.
At Los Angeles International Airport, Southwest celebrated the completion of the makeover of the 13-gate Terminal 1, which now sports food and retail that includes Cassell’s Hamburgers, Reilly’s Irish Pub, Rock & Brews, Urth Caffe, Trejo’s Tacos, Sol Surf, Be Relax and LA Original, a unique shop filled with LA-branded products designed, assembled or manufactured in LA. Proceeds support homeless programs for women in the city.
New York’s LaGuardia Airport showed off the first 11 gates in the brand-new Central Terminal B to wide acclaim. Air Canada, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are currently operating flights from the new concourse; United Airlines will join in 2019. The concourse offers lots of gate seating with charging stations, a nursing room, a kids’ play area, indoor park space and an Air Canada Maple Leaf lounge. (A United Club will open in 2019.)
