Airline Update December 2018

by Harriet Baskas

Dec 19, 2018
General

This past month, Hawaiian Airlines confirmed a no-frills fare option for 2019; United Airlines set a date to begin selling Premium Plus tickets on some long-haul flights; Delta Air Lines tightened the leash (again) on emotional support animals; and a new airline joined the oneworld alliance.

In 2019, Hawaiian Airlines will join American Airlines, Delta and United in offering passengers the option to purchase basic economy fares. The new Main Cabin Basic fare will allow passengers to take one carry-on bag and one personal item onboard, but advance seat assignments will not be available. Refunds/changes will not be allowed and boarding will be in the last group.

United Airlines started selling seats in the Premium Plus section on some long-haul flights. The upgraded premium economy product includes roomier seats, upgraded dining, complimentary cocktails, an amenity kit, a Saks Fifth Avenue pillow and blanket, noise-reducing headphones, discounted access to the United Club and two free checked bags. Premium Plus will be offered on select international flights starting March 30, 2019, and be available on 21 routes by the end of May 2019. Premium Plus will also be available for award travel and upgrades.

Delta Air Lines has new restrictions for emotional support animals on flights. Emotional support animals under 4 months of age are no longer accepted on flights of any length and emotional support animals of any age are no longer accepted on flights longer than eight hours. Passengers who purchased tickets before Dec. 18 will be able to travel under the old rules only until Feb. 1.

And, in early December, the 13 current members of the oneworld alliance voted to add Royal Air Maroc, the flag carrier of Morocco, in 2020 as the newest full member. The oneworld member alliance includes American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LATAM Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and SriLankan Airlines, plus around 30 affiliate airlines. Fiji Airways joined in early December as the group’s first oneworld connect partner.
