More American history has been added to the banks of the Potomac River at National Harbor, close to the nation’s capital. The new Air Force One Experience is officially open, but see it now: The exhibit is likely to move after Jan. 1, 2019. Consisting of an actual Boeing 747 —retrofitted to be a replica of the presidential aircraft — the plane was developed in Rhode Island, moved to its current location by barge down the Atlantic Ocean, up Chesapeake Bay and along the Potomac River.

Visitors are treated to an audio tour narrated by retired United States Chief Master Sergeant Howie Franklin, who served in the capacity of steward aboard Air Force One to presidents Ford, Reagan, Clinton and both Bushes. Within, the plane includes presidential quarters, an exhibit hall and an actual “black box” recorder. The exhibit’s website offers a downloadable teacher’s guide.

Transforming the former Pan Am craft took a full two years and involved 150 workers. Weighing nearly 200 tons, stretching 232 feet in length and standing close to 63 feet in height (more than four stories), the plane’s wing span is approximately 196 feet from tip to tip. The entire project was the idea of The Children’s Democracy Project, designed to be a creative living history experience for aviation fans and educate children through non-partisan, hands-on experiences.

Seek Serenity on Lesser-Known Greek Isles

I was handed a lantern as I stepped out of the taxi to meet up with some new friends who had invited me to a local harvest celebration high in the hills of the island of Samos. My unfortunate shoe choice (a pair of wedged heels) acted as an obvious reminder I was new on the island. Everyone in the group trudged up the uneven, rocky terrain with ease as I struggled to get my footing and grasp how I could have so wrongly interpreted “drinks on the terrace” to mean a sea-level abode.

Embrace the Aloha Spirit on a Cruise to Hawai‘i

To say the Islands of Hawai‘i have long attracted travelers is an understatement. Fifteen hundred years ago, guided only by the stars, Polynesians crossed the Pacific Ocean and first set foot on the islands. Since then, European explorers, missionaries and businessmen discovered the islands in the late 1700s into the 1800s, each arriving with their own agendas. Tourism in Hawai‘i as we know it today began in the 1860s when Kīlauea, an active volcano on the Island of Hawai‘i, was considered a top destination for adventure travelers of the time.

Kimpton Mas Olas Resort & Spa Review

Even with the recent proliferation of 5-star resorts between San Juan del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos has defined itself as a quiet yet vibrant alternative for travelers seeking a more peaceful and exclusive Baja experience. Tucked into the nearby fishing village of El Pescadero, Kimpton Mas Olas Resort and Spa fits the bill and more than lives up to its 5-star designation.

Set Off on a Tour of Extraordinary Mechanical Clocks Around the World

It’s approaching 3 o’clock in the afternoon in Bern. Jutting slightly into view at the end of the uneven stone street in the Swiss city’s historic heart stands a medieval tower adorned with the famous 15th-century “time bell,” Zytglogge. A small gathering forms at the tower’s base as the clock prepares to announce the hour — an event heralded by the crowing of a golden rooster, music and a dance of mechanical figures that include an assortment of jolly bears.
