AC Hotel Chicago Downtown Review

On a recent visit to Chicago, we wanted a hotel within walking distance of Magnificent Mile shopping, the Chicago Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The AC Hotel Chicago Downtown was ideally located and our first opportunity to sample this Marriott brand.

Originating in Europe, Marriott introduced the AC brand in the United States three years ago as a joint venture with Antonio Catalan, a Spanish hotelier. Today, there are more than 100 AC Hotels in 13 countries.

We self-parked in the hotel garage and took an elevator to the small lobby. As we arrived  prior to the 3 p.m. check-in, a staff member called housekeeping to see if our room could be available earlier. She also asked for our cellphone number to contact us. My husband grabbed his camera and we decided to explore the neighborhood.

After walking for a minute or two, we discovered The Driehaus Museum, a grand 19th-century residential building. In addition to visiting the beautifully restored rooms of this Gilded Age home, there’s the “L’Affichomania: The Passion for French Posters” exhibit running through Jan. 7, 2018.

The hotel called to say our king superior guestroom was ready. With 50 square feet more than a classic king, this particular room works wonderfully for families. Even with the sofa sleeper open, there’s ample floor space. Our guestroom contained a mini fridge, coffee/tea maker, desk and flat-screen TV. WiFi is complimentary. The design is modern with faux wood flooring. Guests can work out in the fitness center or swim in the adjacent indoor pool.

The AC Kitchen serves a European-inspired breakfast buffet, and The Cazuelo, a Spanish made-to-order egg dish was a hit with Jim. I appreciated the large selection of healthy options. Guests also enjoy drinks and tapas in the evening at the casual AC Lounge, where local musicians perform every other Thursday night. Every Friday and Saturday night, indulge in a Reverse Happy Hour where local beers ($5), select wines ($6) and the cocktail of the week ($7) are available 9–11 p.m. The AC Chicago staff is friendly and the modern property offers the perks we enjoy while traveling.
