I have been to two Northwestern University football games this season and, unfortunately, witnessed two losses. Despite the lack of wins, I enjoyed my time at Ryan Field and on the NU campus.
Wildcat Alley and the N Zone are the two areas for organized pregame activities. Food trucks, beer and wine sales, live television remote broadcasts, large-screen televisions, games and other fun stuff are provided for fans to enjoy. Willie the Wildcat is always around to greet fans. The Northwestern student band also performs close to game time.
There are tailgating options on both sides of the stadium. These parking lots are a sea of purple several hours prior to game time. You’re likely to see current players’ families as well as former players and local celebrities.
Prior to the first game, a loss to Duke University, I stopped at Mustard’s Last Stand for my pre-game meal. Located just west of Ryan Field, this local favorite has been family-run since 1969. On the surface, it is a simple burger and hot dog joint, but the food is well above standard. The turkey burger ranks among my favorites anywhere, and the fountain Coke is especially good. In addition to the delicious food, there is a fun atmosphere, especially on game day.
For the second game, a loss to the University of Akron, I joined my friend Chuck Gekas and his family of tailgaters in the lot by Lake Michigan. The perfect weather and clear sky allowed us to see Chicago’s beautiful skyline as we ate, drank and had fierce bags battles. Within a few blocks of the stadium and with the awesome views, this is a great spot for pre-game fun.
The Wildcats still have five more home games, and I plan on attending them all. The next game, against Michigan, starts Big Ten Conference play, and that is always special. I have confidence coach Pat Fitzgerald will get the ‘Cats back on track, but either way, it is always a fun way to spend a Saturday.
