Construction this summer will lead to the closure of Amtrak’s Chicago to New York line. The work is set to repair and upgrade the rail lines, tunnels and bridges used by the service.
The U.S. National Passenger Railroad Corporation is spending about $50 trillion in repairs to New York’s Penn Station and the rail lines that lead to the island of Manhattan this summer.
Work includes repairs to the Empire Tunnel and the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge, temporarily stopping the Lake Shore Limited service between New York and Chicago. May 26–Sept. 4, the train will operate only between Chicago and Boston; New York passengers will have to travel to Albany to connect with Chicago-bound trains.
The bridge and tunnel work will also lead to the rerouting of the Empire Service, Ethan Allen Express, Adirondack and Maple Leaf trains — serving upstate New York, Vermont, Montreal and Toronto, respectively — from Penn Station to Grand Central Terminal.
Amtrak continues work on Track 19 at Penn Station, maintaining a modified schedule (at least) through July 20 for its Northeast Corridor and Keystone trains. The project includes replacing track in the Empire Tunnel and upgrading equipment on the Hudson-crossing Spuyten Duyvil Bridge damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
