Booking an Airbnb rental with a group of friends, family or coworkers just got easier. With the debut of split payments for groups, there will be no more fighting over the bill and calculating the costs amongst yourselves. The integration of a split payment option was a highly requested feature from Airbnb users, previously required to choose one person to foot the entire bill.
The split payment option is made possible by Airbnb’s acquisition of Tilt, a Venmo-like application enabling peer-to-peer payments.
The feature works by allowing a primary trip organizer to book a listing for the group, and reserve the booking by paying his/her portion of the bill. The rest of the group then has 72 hours to log into Airbnb and pay their respective bills to complete the payment. This does require each group member to download the Airbnb app and create his or her own account. This feature is available for groups as large as 16 people.
According to a survey of Airbnb users by DKC Analytics, 79 percent of U.S. travelers took a group trip in the last five years, and 43 percent lost $1,000 or more due to travel companions failing to pay their fair share. The new split payment feature makes it easier to hold group members accountable for their payment, and ease the burden of splitting the bill.
