Why You Should Visit Bergen, Norway

by Allie Menzione

Jun 26, 2017

Maybe you’ve never heard of the charming Norwegian city surrounded by mountains and fjords and Northern Lights; maybe you just need an extra push to go. Either way, here are some of the reasons Bergen, Norway, should definitely be on your travel radar.

  1. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s most unspoiled tourist destination.

Home to some of the oldest painted wooden buildings, dating back to 1702, and a history spanning 900 years, Bergen is proud to be a UNESCO World Heritage City. National Geographic also named it the world’s most unspoiled tourist destination. The city is full of history for you to uncover.

  1. Unique and Striking Beauty

From the tiny painted houses to the winding fjords and seven totally picturesque mountains, Bergen is strikingly beautiful. Catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights or experience the wonder of the sun staying up until midnight in this whimsical city.

  1. Great Nightlife

Although small, the population of students in the city makes for a lively nightlife. Saturdays are the best nights to go out, and the party doesn’t start until well after 11 p.m.

  1. Fish Market

As the country’s busiest seaport, it’s no wonder Bergen has an incredible fish market. The fish market existed since the 1200s and is one of Norway’s most visited outdoor attractions. The historic and exciting market draws in visitors from around the world.

  1. Adventure

Whether you wish to hike one of the gorgeous seven mountains, take a cruise through the picturesque fjords or ride a sunset cable car up Mount Urliken, Bergen has something for the adventurous at heart.

Wellness Comes Naturally in Greenville, South Carolina

Strolling through downtown Greenville, South Carolina, it’s easy to see why the city ranks high among the best places to live in the United States: Shops, restaurants and coffee bars line the streets; there are also performance venues, hotels and outdoor plazas. But what really sets this upstate city of just more than 78,000 residents apart are the easily accessible parks and walking trails encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city by foot or cycle (both handcycles and adaptive bikes are available to rent). Even better, as Greenville continues to grow, city planners and major employers work together to expand these opportunities. When Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, for instance, opened in 2009, the paved, multiuse pathway ran about 9 miles from the heart of Greenville to the town of Traveler’s Rest.
