The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, opened in July 2016, is all about the views. That’s apparent the moment you step out of the elevator onto the 36th floor, where you’re immediately treated to the hotel’s eye-catching and dramatic cocktail bar, framed by undulating glass walls that draw attention to a kaleidoscopic view of Tokyo spreading beyond its huge picture window. Occupying the top seven floors of a 36-story high-rise in Akasaka, the hotel’s 250 rooms also capitalize on the views, with inviting day beds spreading the length of wall-to-wall windows, the perfect spot for relaxing with a morning coffee or watching the day fade into sparkling city lights. Even bathrooms provide views, either from glass walls that look out onto the bedroom and the window beyond (and which can become opaque with the push of a button) or from window-side tubs in more deluxe rooms. Otherwise, guestrooms are contemporary and unfussy, bathed in white but with splashes of color provided by pillows and artwork. They’re also high-tech, with iPads in each room that control everything from lighting and temperature to blackout drapes and also provide information on sightseeing, the weather, flight schedules and more. For extra pampering, it’s worth paying more for Club Lounge privileges, which include a buffet breakfast, evening cocktails with substantial appetizers, free access to the swimming pool and other services.
Hotel facilities include a spa with five treatment rooms, as well as an indoor lap pool and large, state-of-the-art gym, both with panoramic views over the city. Restaurants, too, take advantage of Tokyo as a backdrop, with Oasis Garden providing all-day dining and a Japanese restaurant offering contemporary Japanese cuisine as well as dedicated sushi and saké bars and a teppanyaki grill.
But it’s not just outward that this hotel sets its sights. Its public spaces feature 100 pieces of artwork by Japanese artists, justifying the word “gallery” in its name. The first Luxury Collection hotel in Japan, The Prince Gallery also boasts an excellent location in the heart of Tokyo, with five subway lines connected to the hotel via underground passageways. In addition, the many bars and restaurants that make up Akasaka’s nightlife scene lie within an easy walk. In short, this glamorous newcomer already has loyal fans. Because of its Starwood connection, foreigners make up 60 percent of hotel guests, 80 percent of whom are American.
