Name: Adam Simkins
Title: General Manager
Company, city: Hyatt Regency Incheon; Incheon, South Korea
Number of employees: 300
Recent project: Hyatt Regency Incheon broke ground for a second hotel next to our current building. With 502 guestrooms, it will open in 2014, making us the largest hotel in Incheon, the second-largest in Korea and the largest Hyatt Regency brand hotel outside of the United States.
First job: I managed my own business before joining Hyatt International in 1993.
Little-known fact about you: I was the founding president of Skål International Incheon.
Your Business
Essential business philosophy: Hyatt aims to make guests feel the “Hyatt Touch,” authentic hospitality. My philosophy is making people my priority, whether they are employees, guests or owners; making a difference in their lives gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Best way to keep a competitive edge: Employees who are trained well and satisfied with their jobs offer exceptional service from the heart, keeping customers content. It is also important to monitor international and local trends and manage change.
Yardstick of success: I’ve succeeded when employees find pleasure in their work, guests have a memorable experience and owners and stakeholders are content with the outcome of hotel management.
Most important item you take when traveling: A notepad and pen to jot down ideas or note things to share with employees
How you spend your time on board: I seldom have time to read; on the plane, I focus on reading, and my iPad is essential.
Favorite restaurant in the world: The Hyatt Regency Hangzhou’s 28 Hubin Road is an authentic Chinese restaurant with all the elements — design, atmosphere, service and great food. It presents its menu with pizzazz, offering specialties from Zhejiang, Suzhou and Huiyang.
Favorite destination: All the destinations I travel to are great. It is difficult to name a “best.”
About Your Brand
What makes the Hyatt Regency Incheon stand above other airport hotels:
It is not a typical airport hotel. Minutes from Incheon Airport, we are convenient to the Incheon Free Economic Zone and downtown Seoul. Our geographic advantage means we can host international conventions while also attracting leisure guests. Our pillar-less Grand Ballroom, Regency Ballroom and 17 meeting rooms accommodate anything from a meeting for 10 to a convention of 1,200. Well-equipped facilities, professional teams, great food and hospitality make the Hyatt Regency Incheon ideal for business and leisure.
What regular guests know about the property that others might find valuable:
They know we are not a traditional airport hotel and we genuinely love people. A special place is The Terrace on the second floor, which opens to a beautiful wildflower garden; the floral scent wafts in on the coastal breeze. Barbecues held here in summer are popular; the garden is connected to our swimming pool, providing an exotic atmosphere.
Describe the hotel’s dining and entertainment options.
Restaurant 8 has eight different dining concepts, four Western and four Eastern. Guests can choose from 4,000-plus bottles of wine and enjoy skilled chef performances at five show kitchens. Our Vy Bar is the perfect place to socialize, combining advanced lighting and sound systems, music, karaoke suites and an extensive drink selection.
