This year marks the 150th anniversary of Buffalo Gap, Texas, and, to add to the celebrations, the town has been chosen as one of seven Texas destinations to host the Smithsonian Institute’s national exhibit, Crossroads: Change in Rural America. On view until April 27 in Buffalo Gap Historic Village, this exhibit provides powerful insight into how Buffalo Gap helped define the rural landscape of this part of Texas.
“Buffalo Gap has long been a symbol of resilience and community spirit, and being selected to have this national spotlight on our small town in Texas is an incredible honor,” said Nathan Lowry, chairman, Buffalo Gap Chamber of Commerce Board. “This exhibition provides a powerful opportunity to reflect on our town’s journey — where we’ve been, where we are and where we’re headed.”

Each week will offer a different theme: The Buffalo, Native Americans, Traversing the Trails, Ranching and Agriculture, Oil and Gas, and Salute the Military. These exhibits will be augmented by a lecture series. Speakers include Henry Crawford presenting Buffalo Hunters, A Hands-On History; John Dearing’s discussion of the Tonkawa Indians; and a talk by Lance Tahmahkera, who will share his own personal family stories of the Comanche tribe. Also on view: a Longhorn Cattle Exhibit, Ballads of Buffalo Gap Video History, Fort Chadbourne Exhibits and the Dyess Memorial Museum Display.
“We are thrilled to welcome visitors to experience Buffalo Gap’s unique heritage through the lens of this remarkable exhibit,” added Lisa Perini, board member, Buffalo Gap Chamber of Commerce. “By engaging our local businesses, schools, and residents, we’re ensuring this event is not just a showcase of history but a living testament to the strength and evolution of rural America.”
