Once a formidable empire that seemingly evaporated within the jungles of Southeast Asia, Angkor and its fate remain an enduring mystery. For a limited time, visitors to Denver can catch a firsthand glimpse of its wonders at Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s exhibition of Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia.

“We are honored to bring the story of Angkor to Denver,” said Dr. Michele Koons, director of Anthropology and curator of Archaeology, Denver Museum of Nature & Science. “This exhibition offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for guests to connect with one of the world’s most extraordinary ancient civilizations and to marvel at its stunning artistic, cultural and architectural legacy.”

This exhibit includes displays of more than 100 carvings, along with a collection of sacred sculptures and ancient relics — many of which have never before been viewed outside of Cambodia. Thanks to modern technological innovations including Light Detection and Ranging mapping, archaeologists and researchers have uncovered temples and other structures once hidden by thick forests.

“The exhibition has something for everyone, from curious children to history enthusiasts and archaeology buffs,” said Kelsi Cowan, program coordinator, Denver Museum of Nature & Science. “The Museum aims to deepen guests’ appreciation for Angko’s enduring influence and to inspire curiosity about this remarkable civilization. We’re excited for people from across the Rocky Mountain region to connect and engage with living Cambodian art, culture and heritage.”

Highlights include Khmer artifacts from Cambodia such as tools and religious items; an interactive lidar mapping display; hands-on musical experiences showcasing the sounds of the ancient kse diev, the oldest known musical instrument from Khmer culture; and the Bayon Wall scanner, which reveals bas-reliefs depicting scenes from daily life and ceremonies.

Will Tariffs Impact Travelers?

President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs may not only affect imports from Canada and Mexico but also those planning vacations abroad. According to The Independent, international travel is slated to dip by 5 percent this year. Factors like tariffs, the proposed handling of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Trump’s threats to annex Greenland and Canada to the United States are projected to contribute a predicted $64 billion in losses for the U.S. travel industry in 2025, according to Tourism Economics.
