Arrival/Check-in: After a KLM flight from New York’s JFK, we arrived early at the hotel, but we were able to check in and leave our luggage until the room was ready. It was still quite early, so we took a little walk and found a café nearby where we could spend an hour and have breakfast. When we returned, the room was ready, our luggage already delivered.

GUEST QUARTERS: We stayed in Room 322, which offers a view of the canal behind the hotel. As soon as you walk into the room, you’ll find a convenient luggage bench where you can leave your bag. Immediately to the right is the bathroom with a single sink and a large shower. I would like to see double sinks added to the bath area.

On the opposing wall, a closet holds a built-in station for the coffeemaker and a set of drawers. The room features a king-sized bed flanked by two nightstands, a sitting area with a chair and ottoman, and a separate work area with a desk and chair.

SERVICES/AMENITIES: Everyone at the property was friendly, and we enjoyed chatting with the bartenders in the lobby bar (Mama Makan Bar & Terrace). We made a habit of ending the day of touring museums by stopping in for a drink with Ronan and Boss (yes, his name is Boss), who manned the bar. We also enjoyed dinner at the bar and had a long conversation with a German couple traveling with their dog; that was a real icebreaker, and we talked about travel all over the world, pets, and why they liked Hyatt Regency over other properties — parking, location and restaurants topped their list.

The property also has a rather well-known Indonesian restaurant, Mama Makan, which proved a super treat. As the Hyatt is in the Plantage neighborhood around the corner from the Indische Buurt (Indies neighborhood), this offered a perfect opportunity to get a little local. Jeanie served us and encouraged us to try the rijistafel (rice table), the Dutch way to enjoy Indonesian food — a feast of a variety of dishes. Favorites included sambal goreng daging (beef stew) and saté domba (lamb), two of the 13 mini dishes served in little bowls we could share. We ended the meal with tropical homemade ice cream samplings and a shot of Sayah liqueur, incorporating Indonesian spices such as cinnamon, cloves and anise.

Pharmacopia bath products were available, but the pump container for the conditioner did not work, so I had to unscrew it. Overall, the amenities were pleasant.

And in true European fashion, the hotel served a complete breakfast every morning, including cooked eggs and omelets.

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

  • Close to the zoo and easily walkable to all the museums and sites
  • Extremely friendly staff, which made the hotel a favorite

Wellness Comes Naturally in Greenville, South Carolina

Strolling through downtown Greenville, South Carolina, it’s easy to see why the city ranks high among the best places to live in the United States: Shops, restaurants and coffee bars line the streets; there are also performance venues, hotels and outdoor plazas. But what really sets this upstate city of just more than 78,000 residents apart are the easily accessible parks and walking trails encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city by foot or cycle (both handcycles and adaptive bikes are available to rent). Even better, as Greenville continues to grow, city planners and major employers work together to expand these opportunities. When Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, for instance, opened in 2009, the paved, multiuse pathway ran about 9 miles from the heart of Greenville to the town of Traveler’s Rest.

Grand Hotel Des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz Review

Switzerland’s most storied ski town (the one, in fact, credited with pioneering the very concept of Alpine tourism), St. Moritz legendarily attracts the rich, the famous, celebutantes and the wannabes. Yet, there’s something compellingly earthy about the place, a town on a lake rich with natural environs, where winter sports and summer activities draw athletes and mountain lovers aplenty. As at the mountain restaurants (where some arrive by chairlift rather than muscle movement, and all types of diners and imbibers convene), Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz straddles the old and new, the lavish and the understated. The hotel, one of St. Moritz’s oldest, opened as a spa haven in 1864, set atop a healing mineral spring.
