Dome Softball Returned!

College softball is back, and so is the DePaul Dome Tournament. Despite freezing temperatures outside, I comfortably enjoyed a lot of great softball action in the Dome.

After a one-year absence, DePaul Dome Tournament returned to the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont. The season-opening, three-day tourney featured seven teams: DePaul, Valparaiso, St. Thomas, Western Illinois, Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, and BIG EAST opponent Butler. DePaul went 3–3 over the weekend before heading to warmer climates to continue their season.

We had a mini-reunion of Chicago Bandits fans. Five of us became friends from many years of watching the Bandits play outdoors next to the Dome. The Bandits and National Pro Fastpitch ended after the 2019 season, but Athletes Unlimited is starting a new league this year, and one of the teams is the Bandits, although little other information is known yet. We just hope that team will be based in Rosemont.DePaul DePaul

Coming off of two consecutive losing seasons, including 9–38 least year, DePaul looks to rebound under new coach Liz Houck-Jagielski. Shortly after DePaul hired the new coach, I interviewed Coach Jagielski in what I hope will be the first of many I do with her and the Blue Demons this season. At 7-6 now, the team looks to easily beat last year’s record.

The Blue Demons return to Chicago for their home opener at Cacciatore Stadium on March 14, when they host Seton Hall. With 12 games until then, it would be great to see DePaul at 10–10 at that point. No matter the record, I will be at Cacciatore Stadium cheering for my alma mater.
