As global interest in Japan travel continues to rise, Hyogo Prefecture is a captivating destination known for its vibrant blend of history, culture and natural beauty. At the heart of Hyogo’s offerings lies Awaji Island, nestled in the Seto Inland Sea.
This culturally and historically significant island is steeped in Japanese mythology and known as the birthplace of the Japanese archipelago. With its breathtaking landscapes, spiritual landmarks and opportunities for hands-on experiences, Awaji Island provides an authentic look into the heritage and natural beauty of Hyogo Prefecture. For a breathtaking view of Awaji’s coastal beauty and a touch of Japanese mythology, Nushima Onokoro Cruise provides an unforgettable boat tour around Nushima Island. This island is known as one of the legendary locations where Izanagi and Izanami, the gods shown in Japan’s creation myth, are said to have created the Japanese archipelago.
The cruise, operated by skilled local fishermen, offers close-up views of the dramatic Kamitategami-iwa rock formations, known for their unique patterns and colors that seem to rise toward the sky. Passengers are guided through scenic rock outcrops and caves, gaining insight into the legends defining this mythical landscape. This was the first island of the Japanese archipelago in the waters of the Seto Inland Sea, and all other islands were formed after this.

Located on Awaji Island, Izanagi Shrine is dedicated to the deities Izanagi and Izanami, the mythical creators of Japan, and is believed to be the oldest shrine in the country. Visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere surrounded by lush nature, traditional architecture and sacred sites. Highlights include the iconic 900-year-old camphor tree, revered as the God of Childbirth and Marital Relations, where visitors pray for safe deliveries. The shrine’s expansive grounds feature various smaller shrines dedicated to agriculture, longevity and disaster protection, offering a reflective and spiritual experience amid Awaji’s natural beauty.

Mindful drinking with an eye on wellness can mean ordering a zero-proof or low ABV cocktail instead of one that’s boozy and stirred, or slowly savoring one glass of wine instead of tossing back two or three. But sometimes, where you’re sipping a beverage can have just as much of a positive effect on your mind, body and spirit as what’s in your glass.

Apr 30, 2025Relais Villa Porta Review
Tucked into a Lake Maggiore enclave overlooking the Gulf of Colmegna, Relais Villa Porta is an idyllic place to take in a side of the Italian Lakes region that’s different from buzzy Lake Como during high season. In 1820, it was built as a hunting lodge, and by the end of the century, was transformed into an inn by Leopoldo Casnedi. Over time, the surrounding parkland was further enhanced with rare plants collected by Pietro Porta, its second owner and botanist, as well as regular guests wanting to support his efforts. This ensured the inn would ultimately sit pretty within a 10,000-square-meter park surrounding the main villa, a 19th-century Liberty-style greenhouse and original Villa Porta mosaic.
