Passengers who don’t have the means or inclination to spring for a seat in the front of the plane but want more than the bare-bones experience found back in coach increasingly choose a third option, premium economy. This cabin can offer the best of both worlds: some of the amenities and comfort of first or business class with a more approachable ticket price. Airlines recognize this trend, launching or beefing up premium-economy seats to appeal to discerning yet budget- minded travelers. Here’s what’s new in this buzzy category.

DELTA AIR LINES
This fall Delta Air Lines will expand its popular premium- economy option for passengers traveling between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX). Delta Premium Select is now available on four of the airline’s 11 peak-day flights between those two markets on newly reconfigured Boeing 767 widebody aircraft, with plans to expand the JFK–LAX frequencies later in the year. The carrier also recently refreshed Delta Premium Select cabins, now featuring more locally inspired dining, more dedicated customer service and the option to pre-select onboard meals. A new premium amenity kit from Someone Somewhere is filled with products including an eye mask and lip balm from Grown Alchemist.

Due to continued demand of Qantas premium cabins including premium economy, Australia’s flag carrier widened its options. The airline upgraded its Airbus A380 aircraft to include more premium-economy seats and reconfigured its retrofitted A380s flying from Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD) to include 60 premium-economy seats, up from 35. Qantas Dreamliners (Boeing 787s), which operate the majority of routes from the United States to Australia, featured 28 premium-economy seats — a larger percentage than its competitors. Perhaps most notable are the lighting upgrades in its Airbus A350 aircraft found in cabins including premium economy, designed to stave off jet lag. The result of scientific research, lighting trials and 150 hours of testing, the customizable lighting is inspired by the Australian landscape. Twelve unique lighting scenes help passengers sync up their circadian rhythms to their final destination, including “awake,” “sunset,” “sunrise,” “welcome” and “farewell,” as well as themes for taxi, takeoff, landing and sleep. This initiative is part of Project Sunrise, Qantas’ plan in 2026 to fly non-stop from New York and London to Australia’s East Coast.

Emirates first launched premium economy in 2022 on select flights. It’s expanded this cabin class over the past few years with luxurious seats, more legroom, elegant design, in-seat entertainment, and elevated cuisine and drinks. It’s the only airline in the region to offer this type of cabin, and it’s so upscale it actually rivals other airlines’ business-class offerings. The option is currently available on flights to London (LHR), Sydney (SYD), Auckland (AKL), Christchurch (CHC), Melbourne (MEL), Singapore (SIN), New York ( JFK), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX) and Houston (IAH). Before boarding, travelers can expect a dedicated check-in desk in Dubai (DXB), priority boarding, complimentary strollers and a 77-pound baggage allowance. Airbus A380 aircraft are outfitted in a 2-4-2 configuration; the 56 premium-economy seats are 19.5 inches wide with a six-way adjustable headrest, calf and leg rests, 13.3- inch back-mounted LCD screens, outlets, dual USB ports and headphone jack for Emirates’ award-winning ICE in-flight entertainment. Menus, updated monthly, feature regionally inspired cuisine, and large pillows and sustainable blankets and amenity kits assure a good night’s sleep.

The latest additions to American Airlines’ cabins, including premium economy, include niceties designed to make long flights far more comfortable. Not only do new amenity kits contain necessities such as a dental kit, eye mask and ear plugs, but also the airline collaborated with Thirteen Lune for its beauty and skincare products to feature brands including Joanna Vargas and Relevant. Over time, American Airlines will swap in and out different brands and products, assuring frequent travelers get different pampering on every flight. As the airline collaborated with lauded in-flight textile brand John Horsfall, all passengers, including those in premium economy, will make the most of upgraded bedding from recycled materials including lumbar pillows, throw blankets, premium duvets and fleece blankets, all part of the Re-Thread collection. As the airline launches new interiors, premium-economy passengers will also enjoy conveniences like wireless charging, more storage space and privacy headrest wings.
ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS
Japan’s largest airline rolled out its premium economy cabin in 2019. But it’s expanded over the years and now includes these seats on its Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s and 787 Dreamliners. Seats have a 38-inch pitch, calf-supporting leg rests, 15.6-inch monitors and headrests with adjustable reading lights. Passengers can partake of the business-class beverage menu with options including saké, shochu and umeshu plum wine as well as Champagnes, reds and whites. Also expect an Asian-Western fusion menu, homemade bread and petits fours for a sweet ending to dinner.
SINGAPORE AIRLINES
As of March 31, Singapore Airlines revamped its premium economy class to make it even more desirable to passengers looking for a touch of luxury. After being welcomed with a glass of Charles de Cazanove Brut Tradition NV Champagne, travelers choose from a curated menu of new appetizers, main courses and desserts, all served on custom-made porcelain plates. In addition, a Book the Cook menu option offers selections available to prebook at least 24 hours before departure. To pair alongside dishes, the airline presents a list of Champagnes and wines specifically selected by its panel of experts. Flights longer than seven hours come with a basic amenity kit with an eye mask, slippers and lip balm, all from sustainable U.S.-based company Out of the Woods.
JAPAN AIRLINES
The SKYTRAX 2024 World Airline Awards recently lauded Japan Airlines as the World’s Best Premium Economy Class, as voted by passengers. In January 2024 JAL rolled out its new Airbus A350-1000 with premium economy cabins featuring large dividers for more privacy; motorized, horizontal-adjusting leg rest; and a 16-inch 4-K monitor 1.3 times larger than the prior model. In addition, travelers get access to a priority check-in counter and Sakura Lounge before departure; knowledgeable cabin crews; fully reclinable seats that don’t infringe on passengers seated behind; and sparkling wine, shochu, snacks and, on some routes, Udon De Sky noodles.
LUFTHANSA
Allegris, the German airline’s $2.5 billion initiative to revamp and make the long-haul experience better, included upgrades to its premium economy class. Modern seats have a hardshell design, 39-inch pitch, more legroom and recline without bothering the person seated behind. The table and monitor always remain in an ideal position, and the center armrest holds noise-cancelling headphones and wireless charging. A travel kit provides eye shades, ear plugs, lotion and other niceties.

The low-cost, long-haul French airline doesn’t skimp on Premium Blue on its Airbus A350 aircraft. Seats in the private cabin at the front of the aircraft measure 18 inches wide, with 36 inches of leg space, adjustable headrests with four positions, footrests and leg rests. Each seat features a 12-inch HD touchscreen, power outlet with USB port, center console and cup holder, and in-seat entertainment. Passengers are greeted with a welcome drink, then treated to gourmet cuisine and alcoholic and alcohol-free beverages.
