Steeped in both history and modern vitality, Washington, D.C., is a city where emblematic venues showcase the heights exceptional people reach intellectually, culturally, politically and physically. A case in point: The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum.
Orville and Wilbur Wright may have grown up in Dayton, Ohio, and flown from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, for the first time, but their 1903 Wright Flyer sits in residence at The Wright Brothers & The Invention of the Aerial Age exhibit. And the Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia, which the museum designated a Milestone in Flight, is on view at The Destination Moon display. To view these and some of the other 60,000 artifacts, get the required complimentary Timed Entry pass online.
The District of Columbia was created as our nation’s capital city in 1790; the following year, Pierre Charles L’Enfant laid out the city’s physical framework at the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. He formed geometric quadrants on a traditional north-south, east-west grid — Northwest (N.E.), Southeast (S.E.) and Southwest (S.W.) — and added a network of diagonal axes, broad avenues of public land for parks and circles, with wheel-and-spoke-like streets.

Northwest, the Central Business District, is the largest quadrant and home to The White House, National Mall, Dupont and Logan circles, Kennedy Center and historic Georgetown. Georgetown was already an established free-standing town 40 years before the capital was created and promptly became a tobacco inspection port. The colonial-era neighborhood houses client-worthy waterfront restaurants including Fiola Mare, which specializes in fine Italian-influenced coastal cuisine, and familiar 5-star hotels: Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC and The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
Northwest addresses and the letter W link three iconic 5-stars, offering luxurious accommodations, business centers, fitness facilities and spa services, plus power-perfect places to rendezvous. The Waldorf Astoria Washington DC opened in June 2022 within The Old Post Office building, c.1892. Peacock Alley, set in its nine-story, light-infused atrium, makes for an extraordinary place to meet. At The Bazaar by José Andrés, the Spanish chef ’s culinary gems nod to Americana; Sushi Nakazawa holds a client-impressing Michelin-star; and The Tasting Salon offers private tastings of rare international spirits and wines paired with food under the lobby’s 315-foot Clock Tower, where the National Park Service operates the city’s second-highest observation tower.
The Watergate Hotel maintained Luigi Moretti’s original 1967 curvilinear “ship on the Potomac” look when it made its June 2016 debut after a $125 million makeover. Its curvaceous spirit prevails with spiral stairs, mirror-polished twisted columns and Ron Arad’s softly rounded lobby furnishings. The Next Whiskey Bar, in the lobby and one of the city’s most appealing spots, repeats the theme with stainless- steel tubes and spiral steel shelving. Likewise in Kingbird, the double- height restaurant, where eight large spiral chandeliers descend from a black polished plaster ceiling. At Top of the Gate Rooftop, the 360-degree panoramic view features nearby Kennedy Center and the Washington Monument.

The 335-room InterContinental The Willard Washington D.C. has welcomed every U.S. president since Franklin Pierce, in 1853, plus honorable clients from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Michelle Obama’s relatives. The Willard Tea Room in Peacock Alley serenades invitees with live harp music, and Café du Parc pleases them with French brasserie fare. As for The Round Robin Bar, which made its debut in 1847, it deserves its signature title as the “Oval Office of bars.”
The Wharf, Southwest, features a recently constructed, mile-long, waterfront pedestrian promenade within a 24-acre commercial, residential and entertainment development which includes The Anthem, a 3,000-seat major concert venue. The city’s second IHG, InterContinental Washington D.C. – The Wharf, is a contemporary, glass-clad hotel; its rooftop pool views the Potomac across to East Potomac Park. Among a myriad of restaurants, Fabio Trabocchi celebrates Spanish seafood at Del Mar. (A free Southwest Shuttle bus connects The Wharf and the National Mall.)
Flight played a noteworthy role in the nation’s capital and continues to be significant, particularly when heads of state, hostages or the fallen arrive at Joint Base Andrews. Business travelers utilize the city’s three local airports via automobile and bus service: Washington Dulles International (26 miles distant); Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (32 miles away); and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, just across the Potomac in Virginia, which provides a metro link. Amtrak Rail service delivers center city access to the exquisitely renovated Union Station; among the vehicles available outside, D.C. Circulator adds an inexpensive ($1) bus to and around the National Mall and to Georgetown.
Getting around D.C. proves easy for visitors who heed two additional initials: N.W., N.E., S.W. or S.E.

May 14, 2025Hotel Van Zandt Review
One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
