Many resorts on the Island of Hawai’i are perfectly appointed for multigenerational travel. However, Mauna Kea Residences within Mauna Kea Resort expand the way a vacation can be customized exponentially.

The Haupuna Beach Residences include 68 two- to seven-bedroom condos, townhomes and estates ranging from 670 to 3,500 square feet with their combinations of features, including private pools, lanai spaces and panoramic views of the Koahala Coast’s breathtaking geography. While these dwellings promise privacy, Mauna Kea combines a homey feel with the perks and conveniences of a luxury hotel. Guests have access to amenities at The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort along with the many offerings of Mauna Kea, including its own spas, multiple pools, nine dining outlets, a tennis club, resort beaches and group activities.

A more mature multigenerational crowd will appreciate the intimate Wai’ula’ula area, located within The Uplands of Mauna Kea Resort. The Ridge Condos (three bedrooms with upscale comfort and excellent value) and The Villas (three–four bedrooms with stepped-up luxury perfect for entertaining) all boast ocean views. Wide lanais are suited for sunset cocktails, while the grand master suites with private glass and stone baths lend themselves to romance.

The Villas at Mauna Kea Resort are perfectly appointed for larger, multigenerational families or groups of couples traveling to the Big Island of Hawai’i together. The structures are cloistered two-, three- and five-bedroom private hideaways that blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors. The design and décor are peak luxury and a quick jaunt from everything the resort has to offer while providing the opportunity to experience a multimillion dollar residence and lavish resort lifestyle.

While outdoor adventures on the beach, golf course and hiking trails abound on and near the resort’s grounds, it also offers rich cultural experiences exclusive to the property. Every Saturday at 9 a.m., a complimentary 75-minute art tour originating in the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel lobby covers numerous museum-quality art objects from the Pacific and Asia, collected by hotel founder Laurance S. Rockefeller. The expansive collection spotlights Pacific Rim culture and spirituality, from Ainu kimono and glittery Thai icons to Maori canoe prows, bronze Indian chests and wooden carvings. Hawai’ian culture is also featured prominently through displays of traditional kapa (pounded bark) cloth, Hawai’ian quilts and kii (wooden images).

Storytime led by Healani Kimitete-Ah Mow, the property’s Aloha Ambassador, delights children of all ages with the rich customs and culture of the Hawai’ian Islands. Activities include lei making, basic hula, Hawai’ian language classes and more. Healani shares the history and beauty of these and other traditions of Hawai’i while imparting the importance of keeping Hawai’i’s culture alive, vibrant and integral to every visitor’s trip to the island. Within the resort’s Volcano Golf and Country Club subdivision, 4,000 feet above sea level, Volcano Winery offers tastes and a behind-the-scenes look at what winemakers call “the perfect concoction of rain and sun” to produce nationally acclaimed wines.
