Tucked on the westernmost edge of Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico lies a lone wooden swing. Accessible via a path surrounded by scraggy, gnarled willows, it hangs from a capable bench sweeping gently over the water, decorated with the territory’s flag. That location is the photo opp for social media-obsessed guests, especially during burnt-orange sunsets. But it also symbolizes the ethos encapsulating this property 40 minutes east of San Juan: Doing nothing means everything.

Sit on that swing for a few minutes (or more) in solitude, watching the water lap onto the stony beach, and you’ll get it. Ditto for installing yourself in one of the macrame hammocks; servers stationed nearby can fetch you that mojito so you don’t have to interrupt your swaying.

The zen here is bolstered by the fact the resort is situated on a 72-acre peninsula of protected natural reserve in Río Grande. There’s a “biobay” nearby, lit up at night by thousands of microorganisms turning the sea below your kayak neon green. Equally verdant is El Yunque, the only rain forest overseen by the U.S. Parks Department, with its waterfalls, lush vegetation and tropical wildlife. There is no shortage of diversions at the resort and around the region; if you just want to stay put, though, inertia is encouraged.

And there’s no better place to do nothing than in one of the 96 Villas en La Reserva, the newest accommodations. They offer lots of space to decompress or recharge with separate living rooms with queen sleeper sofas, modern kitchenettes, jetted deep-soaking tubs, rainfall showers and large balconies. Pocket doors between every room provide an escape from the rest of your group. Villa guests are treated to daily deliveries from a wheeled cart of warm, fluffy pan sobao, a beloved Puerto Rican baked good served with local cheese and honey butter.

Four pools at the resort (including a lagoon-style one) mean you never have to venture far to sink in a lounger, daybed or cabana bedecked with comfy cushions. There’s a zero-entry beach in front of the main bungalows, and private beachy vibes by the Regency suites, outfitted with private plunge pools. Complimentary non-motorized sports are set up on the beach if you’re so inclined.

The hotel rooms are known for being the largest in Puerto Rico. One thing that will stir you to leave yours, though, is the culinary program. Grab a pre-dinner drink in the Martini Bar, decorated with empty vodka bottles extending from the back bar and curving along the ceiling, before settling into your table at Prime 787. The resort’s steakhouse is sleek and eye-catching, with hanging, huge gilded river stones; trident tiles; and Edison bulbs hanging from rows of carved out circles on the ceiling.

Next door, Nori is an upgrade from the typical resort teppanyaki concept, awash in red accents with Japanese-style hanging lanterns and lattice wooden screens. Sure, you can sit at a communal table and get dinner and a show, but you can also book an adjacent table and enjoy some of the greatest hits of Asian fusion.

Helmed by chef Franchesca Ñeco, Nectar serves fun riffs on modern Puerto Rican cuisine. Tostones are topped with spicy crab, shrimp or ropa vieja; egg rolls are stuffed with pasteles; and tempura shrimp is done alcapurria-style. You can also create your own entree starting with a base of mofongo or bifongo.

The resort is also dotted with more casual spots; grab a kale Caesar salad with grilled shrimp at Brasserie; or an order of seafood-stuffed arepas at Picalo Gallo, the permanent food truck parked between the pool and the beach.

In the coming months, the resort will roll out other low-key offerings, including fire pits and complimentary tastes of local dishes.

In the meantime, soak in that intense Caribbean sun from a lounge chair at the edge of the sea, or hang out on the balcony to watch the frequent showers roll in and just as quickly roll out. Where you are is where you’re meant to be.

Find Inner Peace in India, the Birthplace of Yoga

How far would you travel in pursuit of inner peace? Though the wellness industry has grown in popularity for quite a while, he business skyrocketed post-pandemic, with more and more travelers booking yoga retreats in the name of serenity, spirituality and, of course, self-care. Though the idea of traveling in India initially felt more exciting than relaxing, I found the contrast between the bustling activity outside and the quiet reflection of my yoga practice to be an intoxicating combination.
