Steve McCurry ICONS

by John Wroblewski

Feb 25, 2024

My experience with photojournalist Steve McCurry did not end with my recent Talking Travel interview. Earlier this week I went to Loyola University Museum of Art in Chicago for Steve McCurry ICONS.

Originally debuted in Madrid, the exhibition is in the United States for the first time thanks to the partnership of LUMA and FeverUp. Tucked away a block off of busy Magnificent Mile, LUMA is a beautiful red brick Gothic building. ICONS takes over the entire gallery space, with one to three pictures on each dark navy wall.Steve McCurry

Of course, McCurry’s iconic “Afghan Girl” is one of the first photos one sees upon entering the gallery. Next to it, though, is “Village Boy.” Not nearly as well-known, “Village Boy” struck me as equally poignant, leading me to wonder what launches a photograph to historical significance.Steve McCurry

Another wall featured photos from 9/11. McCurry happened to be in New York at the time of the horrific event. That coincidental timing allowed McCurry to capture amazing photos.Steve McCurrySteve McCurry

Each photo is accompanied by a QR code, allowing attendees to read or hear information. Also, a short video of McCurry discussing his career plays in one of the small rooms. The video also turns the lens on McCurry, showing him throughout his career all over the world.Steve McCurrySteve McCurry

As we discussed in our interview, McCurry focuses more on people than places. His love of humanity, cultures, traditions and conditions led him across the globe. In capturing these images in this way, McCurry reveals more about the locations than mere scenery ever would.Steve McCurry Steve McCurry Steve McCurry

While some of the images are sad, tragic even, I was left with a positive feeling. McCurry somehow made me feel worlds away yet close to the subjects.Steve McCurrySteve McCurry Steve McCurry

Like all great art exhibits, ICONS works on multiple levels. Attendees can view all for the history, the beauty or the humanity. Having interviewed McCurry made it that much more enjoyable for me.Steve McCurry

ICONS is on display at LUMA through March 31. No future locations have been announced, but more are expected.

Wellness Comes Naturally in Greenville, South Carolina

Strolling through downtown Greenville, South Carolina, it’s easy to see why the city ranks high among the best places to live in the United States: Shops, restaurants and coffee bars line the streets; there are also performance venues, hotels and outdoor plazas. But what really sets this upstate city of just more than 78,000 residents apart are the easily accessible parks and walking trails encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city by foot or cycle (both handcycles and adaptive bikes are available to rent). Even better, as Greenville continues to grow, city planners and major employers work together to expand these opportunities. When Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, for instance, opened in 2009, the paved, multiuse pathway ran about 9 miles from the heart of Greenville to the town of Traveler’s Rest.

Grand Hotel Des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz Review

Switzerland’s most storied ski town (the one, in fact, credited with pioneering the very concept of Alpine tourism), St. Moritz legendarily attracts the rich, the famous, celebutantes and the wannabes. Yet, there’s something compellingly earthy about the place, a town on a lake rich with natural environs, where winter sports and summer activities draw athletes and mountain lovers aplenty. As at the mountain restaurants (where some arrive by chairlift rather than muscle movement, and all types of diners and imbibers convene), Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz straddles the old and new, the lavish and the understated. The hotel, one of St. Moritz’s oldest, opened as a spa haven in 1864, set atop a healing mineral spring.
