It’s the flight that never seems to end: a grueling 14-plus hours from the U.S. West Coast and usually another connection on to Brisbane in Queensland. But those who make the trek reap great rewards, including a chance to hold the world’s most cuddle-able creature — the koala. You won’t want to miss this photo op of a lifetime, but Australia’s southern coast boasts plenty of other experiences as well. Tours and attractions offer everything from sublime river boat cruises to surfing the pristine beaches of subtropical offshore islands. Those who prefer to sample the cuisine, culture and history, including that of Indigenous peoples, will find tours, attractions or adventures to fit their interests.

leisurely river cruise and dinner on board, and see the city from your boat. You can also view the cityscape as you tour Brisbane via the local water taxi service called CityCat. For more time on the water, book a day cruise to Fraser Island or Moreton Island, and don’t be surprised if you spot a whale or two. If you’re an early riser, indulge in a morning Champagne cruise along the Sunshine Coast.
Should you prefer to see the sights by land, opt for a Brisbane food tour, hike nearby Tamborine Mountain or the Glass House Mountains, or explore Lamington National Park’s lush rainforest. Then cool off while tasting local brews at XXXX Brewery. Visitors interested in the Indigenous culture can book a tour covering the history and traditions of the local Aboriginal communities. Consider touring the city by renting a Segway or cycling, and join a guided tour that includes the famous Story Bridge, South Bank Parklands with its beach, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Finally, relax and recharge with a stroll through the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt. Coot-tha or the riverside City Botanic Gardens.

Tucked into a Lake Maggiore enclave overlooking the Gulf of Colmegna, Relais Villa Porta is an idyllic place to take in a side of the Italian Lakes region that’s different from buzzy Lake Como during high season. In 1820, it was built as a hunting lodge, and by the end of the century, was transformed into an inn by Leopoldo Casnedi. Over time, the surrounding parkland was further enhanced with rare plants collected by Pietro Porta, its second owner and botanist, as well as regular guests wanting to support his efforts. This ensured the inn would ultimately sit pretty within a 10,000-square-meter park surrounding the main villa, a 19th-century Liberty-style greenhouse and original Villa Porta mosaic.
