It’s always enjoyable to visit Philadelphia, especially around the Fourth of July. The city was vibrant and energetic. The Logan Hotel, A Hilton Curio, in Logan Square was the ideal location for my stay, situated between the museum complex and Center City. I had a sense of déjà vu upon arrival, as if I had been there before. I then recalled it had been the Four Seasons (since relocated) during a prior stay. I was upgraded to a large, quiet room with a lovely view of the courtyard and great amenities, and appreciated the excellent service by the staff.

Being inspired at Independence Hall.
After an early meeting with colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania, I embarked on an ambitious walking itinerary. The first stop was Philadelphia Museum of Art to pay homage to the Rocky statue. I was impressed how everyone waited patiently in line to pose for pictures, each of us playing photographer for one another. After a nostalgic stop at the Mister Softee truck (delighted to see they’re still around and still play the catchy tune), the Boathouse and a sprint around City Hall, I headed to Independence Mall and the historical sites, which are always inspirational. I lingered for a while in front of Independence Hall, as I literally felt the vibe of what it must have been like back then. The buildings are lovingly restored and continue to feel authentic. A few blocks away, Reading Terminal Market was crowded, as usual, and I managed to be a proper tourist and enjoy a Philly cheesesteak. Alas, I was informed the “world-famous” whoopie pies would not travel well, but I did manage to purchase a cache of other baked goods to bring home.

Yo! Paying proper homage.
That evening, I had fun meeting “Betsy Ross” and “Ben Franklin” at GT’s Leisure Lifestyle Awards reception at the beautiful Union League. Both of them stayed completely in character, even when I reminded Ben he must have returned from the past as I had just visited his grave (covered with pennies) and Betsy’s house appeared to have electricity. It was a festive affair and great to connect with current friends and make some new ones, as well. I was totally surprised to once again win a bottle of Dom Perignon during the end-of-evening raffle. I will eagerly await its arrival at my home later this summer. The next day brought the usual thunderstorm travel delays, compounded by residual wildfire smoke, so I took advantage of extra time at the hotel, then eventually hunkered down at the airport prior to departure. In keeping with the theme of the trip, I had plenty of time to watch the movie musical 1776, a seasonal favorite I highly recommend to history buffs.

Soaking up history with Ben and Betsy.
On a somber note, July 4 marked the first anniversary of the parade tragedy in my community of Highland Park, Illinois. The city held a memorial walk in remembrance of that day for all of us who were so deeply affected. My just-concluded trip to the City of Brotherly Love felt even more timely and poignant. May your own travels be safe and filled with hope and joy.
