March 2023

This issue felt like a warm memory, as it allowed me to reminisce on my last few 2022 trips. In October I joined Francis X. Gallagher and Haley Fogarty on a trip to Chicago, where I squeezed in a visit to one of the city’s newest spas (page 26), and in November, my husband, Scott, and I enjoyed an incredible trip to France, sailing the Seine River from Paris through Normandy. Follow along on our itinerary on page 74 and enjoy the gorgeous fall views of the French countryside in my photo. Yes, I’m still dreaming of those croissants … and the macarons … and the cheese, the wine — well, you get the point.

Speaking of river cruises, you have an exclusive chance to sail with Global Traveler this fall. Join our publisher and CEO, Francis X. Gallagher, on AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna visiting Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Some of the fun includes an Oktoberfest celebration in Vilshofen, a walking tour of Bratislava and a taste of the famous apricots in the Wachau Valley. Learn more and book at amawaterways.com/globaltraveler, using promo code GLOBALTRAVELER. I’ve become a fan of river cruising — docking in small villages otherwise inaccessible, waking up each day in a new port, unpacking once, making friends with fellow passengers and so much more. Scott would agree!

My trip down memory lane continued as I put together the photos for our GT Tested Reader Survey awards event recap, on page 34, recounting my December trip to Los Angeles with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team to celebrate the winners of our 19th annual reader-voted awards. On the subject of awards, do you think you’re the FXExpress Traveler of the Year? Submit your nominations in seven separate categories through March 31 at globaltravelerusa.com/fxexpresstraveleroftheyear.

While I got to take a look back, I’m also preparing to take flight next week for an overnight to Miami, and I had a chance to reconnect with many travel contacts and writers in January in New York City at TravMedia’s International Media Marketplace. I’m looking forward to a 2023 full of new adventures. Travel with us this month to Philadelphia, Ibiza, Bagan, Abu Dhabi, the Rocky Mountains, Turks & Caicos, Mexico City and Nashville. Next month we release our special WhereverFamily digital issue. Use the QR code on the cover to download our app so you don’t miss it!

Wellness Comes Naturally in Greenville, South Carolina

Strolling through downtown Greenville, South Carolina, it’s easy to see why the city ranks high among the best places to live in the United States: Shops, restaurants and coffee bars line the streets; there are also performance venues, hotels and outdoor plazas. But what really sets this upstate city of just more than 78,000 residents apart are the easily accessible parks and walking trails encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city by foot or cycle (both handcycles and adaptive bikes are available to rent). Even better, as Greenville continues to grow, city planners and major employers work together to expand these opportunities. When Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, for instance, opened in 2009, the paved, multiuse pathway ran about 9 miles from the heart of Greenville to the town of Traveler’s Rest.

Grand Hotel Des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz Review

Switzerland’s most storied ski town (the one, in fact, credited with pioneering the very concept of Alpine tourism), St. Moritz legendarily attracts the rich, the famous, celebutantes and the wannabes. Yet, there’s something compellingly earthy about the place, a town on a lake rich with natural environs, where winter sports and summer activities draw athletes and mountain lovers aplenty. As at the mountain restaurants (where some arrive by chairlift rather than muscle movement, and all types of diners and imbibers convene), Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz straddles the old and new, the lavish and the understated. The hotel, one of St. Moritz’s oldest, opened as a spa haven in 1864, set atop a healing mineral spring.
