It’s never too early to plan that next big trip. Look ahead to 2023 with travel inspiration from these international destinations.

Australia

Australia reopened its borders to international travelers earlier in 2022. Avoid crowds in one of the country’s off-the-beaten-path regions. The Northern Territory offers culture, adventure, wildlife experiences and culinary delights. The region is home to Uluru (previously Ayers Rock), Kakadu National Park and the city of Darwin. Experiential accommodation Finniss River Lodge recently opened. With only six suites, the lodge offers a secluded escape, whether you’re interested in a relaxing or adventurous getaway.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast offers eco-friendly experiences to travelers. Lodging options include eco-lodges, rainforest bungalows and small boutique hotels. Experience the region’s rich Afro-Caribbean heritage and culture. Explore the many beaches and national parks, including Playa Punta Uva, Puerto Viejo, Playa Cahuita, Tortuguero National Park, Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo Natural Wildlife Refuge.

Kyoto, Japan

With the impending reopening of its borders, Japan is a must-visit for 2023. Kyoto offers new hotels for travelers in 2023. Originally built in 1952, Ryokan Ginkaku Kyoto closed five years ago for renovations and plans to reopen in 2023. Dusit Thani Kyoto will be home to 150 guestrooms, a Thai-themed restaurant, Japanese restaurant and wellness facilities.

Madeira, Portugal

The archipelago located off the coast of Portugal was recently featured in TIME magazine’s The World’s Greatest Place of 2022 list. The hidden-gem destination offers travelers coastal landscapes, delicious seafood, local Madeira wine and breathtaking hiking trails. Madeira welcomes direct flights from New York (JFK) to Funchal (FNC), making it easier than ever to visit.

Wellness Comes Naturally in Greenville, South Carolina

Strolling through downtown Greenville, South Carolina, it’s easy to see why the city ranks high among the best places to live in the United States: Shops, restaurants and coffee bars line the streets; there are also performance venues, hotels and outdoor plazas. But what really sets this upstate city of just more than 78,000 residents apart are the easily accessible parks and walking trails encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city by foot or cycle (both handcycles and adaptive bikes are available to rent). Even better, as Greenville continues to grow, city planners and major employers work together to expand these opportunities. When Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, for instance, opened in 2009, the paved, multiuse pathway ran about 9 miles from the heart of Greenville to the town of Traveler’s Rest.

Grand Hotel Des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz Review

Switzerland’s most storied ski town (the one, in fact, credited with pioneering the very concept of Alpine tourism), St. Moritz legendarily attracts the rich, the famous, celebutantes and the wannabes. Yet, there’s something compellingly earthy about the place, a town on a lake rich with natural environs, where winter sports and summer activities draw athletes and mountain lovers aplenty. As at the mountain restaurants (where some arrive by chairlift rather than muscle movement, and all types of diners and imbibers convene), Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz straddles the old and new, the lavish and the understated. The hotel, one of St. Moritz’s oldest, opened as a spa haven in 1864, set atop a healing mineral spring.

Pause for a Harmonious Blend of Wellness and Nature in Hong Kong

I was illiterate when I first visited Hong Kong. Aged 17, I couldn’t understand a word of the Chinese neon signs. But 40 years later, I have changed, Hong Kong has changed, and my ability to understand the signs has changed. Now I point my phone at the unintelligible script, open a translation app, and everything magically morphs into English. The exotic becomes mundane: Shoe Store. Office Supplies. Laundry. Dentist. Insurance Broker.
