Golden Rock Resort, the upscale, contemporary lifestyle property, opened in 2021 on the remote Dutch Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius. Compared to many other Caribbean islands, Sint Eustatius (aka Statia) is not known for mass tourism.

With no casinos and no non-stop flights, most visitors to Sint Eustatius come for the hiking trails, dive sites and a few small museums. The island’s capital, Oranjestad, has only 1,000 residents, not be confused with Oranjestad, Aruba’s capital, with its population of 29,000.
The hip, beautifully designed 32-room Golden Rock Resort has already attracted new interest in visiting this unspoiled island. With its signature restaurant, Breeze, and miles of unobstructed views of the ocean and the neighboring islands of St. Kitts and St.Martin/Sint Maarten, it may not be an unknown Caribbean gem much longer.

Located at the base of a green, dormant volcano known as The Quill, the resort and Breeze, named after the refreshing breezes on the restaurant’s terrace, is the first phase of Golden Rock’s development. The property will will add 28 villas and 17 lodges by late summer.
Breeze offers 164 seats and is open daily for all meals and late-night drinks. Breeze’s chef, Matthias Fischer, encourages resort guests to be daring with their palette, as he created menus highlighting delicacies like Caribbean-spiced filet mignon with sun-choke puree, seasoned vegetables in a tamarind demi-glace; curry chicken Napoleon with peanut butter sauce; Caribbean bouillabaisse with mussels, clams, tuna, prawns and lobster in a tomato lobster broth; and tiger shrimp brochette with sun-dried tomato and vegetable julienne with fettuccine pasta in a red bell pepper coconut sauce.

The resort’s vegetable garden supplies an abundance of fresh ingredients to create a wide variety of flavorful dining and excellent cocktails. Drinks with names like Statia Flower, Golden Rock Mojito and JB’s Jewel are offered at the bar.

Mar 27, 2025Golf to Gastronomy to the Great Outdoors, Phoenix Rolls Out the Desert Carpet
You won’t need a sleeping potion here. The coyotes will howl you to sleep,” said the driver who picked me up at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to take me to my meeting at the historic Wigwam, a storied resort I last visited as a child. I’m excited to return to experience its characteristic adobe casitas and wander through its acres of lush Sonoran Desert landscape. Despite the driver’s warnings of menacing coyotes, I gaze in joy at the otherworldliness of the anthropomorphic saguaro cacti rising like humans waving their arms to the sky. They pepper the roadside and mottle the horizon all the way to purple- hued Camelback Mountain, a supreme hiking destination that gleams in the sun. Immense pinkish boulders, purportedly eons old, litter the expanses. They look like colossal petrified tennis balls left from a rigorous rally from long ago. Suddenly, a roadrunner speeds across the highway. “Whoa,” said the driver. “At least it wasn’t a Gila monster.”

Mar 26, 2025Head to Jackson Hole and Revel in the Remote Possibilities
For a city girl like me, stepping into the town square of Jackson, in northwest Wyoming, felt like walking onto a slicker set of the television show Gunsmoke. Wooden sawtooth facades surround Jackson’s Town Square (a.k.a. George Washington Memorial Park). Visitors stroll the boardwalk connecting the Western-style buildings, each with a large window displaying goods, restaurants and art galleries. Iconic arches, assembled with discarded elk antlers from nearby National Elk Refuge, perch on each corner of the town square. Stagecoaches pulled by teams of horses parade other city-dwellers around the park.
