After being closed to travelers for a long period of time, Chile is officially ready to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from around the world. The National System of State Protected Wildlife Areas comprises 22 percent of domestic territory in Chile, and with 43 national parks, 45 national reserves and 18 natural monuments, the country is the perfect destination for travelers to participate in sustainable tourism.

Recently, the Chilean Tourism Authorities created Sustainability Seals, also known as S Seals, awarded to companies promoting sustainable tourism. Chile took the necessary steps to promote and encourage sustainable experiences through the use of renewable energies, modes of transportation and eco-friendly production.

Visits to Parks and National Reserves

Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserves

Travelers who love to go camping should check out Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserves. This is a unique opportunity for campers to stay in the middle of Chile’s largest native forest, home to four designated areas for trails and educational activities so travelers can learn about the region’s flora and fauna.

Fray Jorge National Park

Fray Jorge National Park is an unusual UNESCO Biosphere reserve nestled in the shoreline, facing the Pacific Ocean on the Talinay Mountain Range. It has a microclimate that feeds a rainforest in the middle of a semi-arid climate zone. Travelers can explore the trails leading to lookouts where they can see hawks, partridges, Humboldt penguins and Andean foxes.

Juan Fernandez Archipelago

This group of islands is located more than 200 miles from Chile’s Pacific coastline and is known for its impressive dive sites and native species — keep an eye out for the red hummingbird and Juan Fernandez lobster. Make sure to explore the underwater paradise of Robinson Crusoe, which offers crystal-clear visibility and marine biodiversity.

S Seal Lodging Options

EcoCamp Patagonia

EcoCamp Patagonia is located in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park and home to one-of-a-kind accommodations in the shape of geodesic domes. The camp operates on minimum environmental impact; electricity is provided primarily from solar panels, domes are connected to wooden walkways to preserve the grounds and materials used to run the property are all recycled.

Tierra Chiloe

This sustainable boutique hotel is located in the archipelago of Chiloe and is like no other accommodation due to its modern comfort, unique spa and surrounding area. The property highlights and honors nature and the area’s biodiversity. It was built with low-impact construction methods and makes use of natural resources.

Breathe in the View and Sip in the Moment in Puerto Vallarta

Mindful drinking with an eye on wellness can mean ordering a zero-proof or low ABV cocktail instead of one that’s boozy and stirred, or slowly savoring one glass of wine instead of tossing back two or three. But sometimes, where you’re sipping a beverage can have just as much of a positive effect on your mind, body and spirit as what’s in your glass.

Relais Villa Porta Review

Tucked into a Lake Maggiore enclave overlooking the Gulf of Colmegna, Relais Villa Porta is an idyllic place to take in a side of the Italian Lakes region that’s different from buzzy Lake Como during high season. In 1820, it was built as a hunting lodge, and by the end of the century, was transformed into an inn by Leopoldo Casnedi. Over time, the surrounding parkland was further enhanced with rare plants collected by Pietro Porta, its second owner and botanist, as well as regular guests wanting to support his efforts. This ensured the inn would ultimately sit pretty within a 10,000-square-meter park surrounding the main villa, a 19th-century Liberty-style greenhouse and original Villa Porta mosaic.
