Visiting Red Bank Battlefield Park

by Katie Skrzek

Nov 4, 2021

Red Bank Battlefield ParkA few weeks ago, my friends and I visited Red Bank Battlefield Park in Gloucester County, New Jersey. For the anniversary of the Battle of Red Bank, from the American Revolutionary War, the park hosted a battle reenactment. The battle took place at that site on Oct. 22, 1777.

My husband and I parked our car just outside the entrance. We met our friends and began wandering the grounds. The park had displays, food trucks, crafts for kids and other activities set up. We toured the James and Ann Whitall House, open to visitors for the event. The house featured displays and diagrams demonstrating what life was like in the 1700s. We walked through the house, then made our way to the waterfront to take in the views of the Delaware River and Philadelphia skyline in the distance. The reenactment was set to begin, so we walked over to get a prime spot.

Red Bank Battlefield ParkRed Bank Battlefield ParkWe watched as the American soldiers lined up to fight the Hessian troops fighting for the British. The guns and cannonballs seemed realistic and were quite loud! After watching the troops charge — and the Americans win — we made our way back to our cars … and 2021.

The park is open sunrise to sunset all year, except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. It’s a great space for a visit to stroll or take a tour.

To cap off our day of history, we went to nearby Eight & Sand Beer Co. for a round of beers in the outdoor beer garden.
