Happy Passover!

by Haley Fogarty

Apr 1, 2021

This past weekend was the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which in Hebrew is called Pesach. This spring holiday celebrates the liberation of Hebrews from slavery under the Pharaoh in Egypt. It will last March 28–April 4, and those who celebrate typically do so by avoiding all leavened bread or any product containing leaven. This represents the matzo created by Jews leaving Egypt who are said to have baked it on their backs while traveling. I love matzo any time of the year!

My family typically celebrates with members all over the East Coast. We traditionally get together two evenings for a lovely sedar, where we read the story of Passover, sing and eat. While we aren’t able to do so this year due to COVID, it was truly special to have my local family members get together for a swift sedar and delicious food made by my aunt. While us six grandchildren have grown out of finding the hidden Afikoman — a piece of Matzo typically hidden for the children to find after the sedar — we did enjoy each other’s company with good food, a lovely Passover story and quality time. I hope all who celebrate had a lovely and meaningful holiday and are enjoying a week of yummy matzo!

Wellness Comes Naturally in Greenville, South Carolina

Strolling through downtown Greenville, South Carolina, it’s easy to see why the city ranks high among the best places to live in the United States: Shops, restaurants and coffee bars line the streets; there are also performance venues, hotels and outdoor plazas. But what really sets this upstate city of just more than 78,000 residents apart are the easily accessible parks and walking trails encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city by foot or cycle (both handcycles and adaptive bikes are available to rent). Even better, as Greenville continues to grow, city planners and major employers work together to expand these opportunities. When Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, for instance, opened in 2009, the paved, multiuse pathway ran about 9 miles from the heart of Greenville to the town of Traveler’s Rest.
