Broiled Grapefruit

The last few months of the year are always busy at Global Traveler. In a typical year, I would be busy traveling for meetings and experiencing new hotels and, most importantly, their unique cuisines. Over the years one of my favorite breakfast items is the simple grapefruit — tart, sweet, filled with antioxidants and more. Yet when grapefruit is broiled with a teaspoon of brown sugar on top, it quickly becomes a sweet treat I also love.

As it’s finally a bit cold in Los Angeles and I feel nostalgic for travel, I decided to make this warm and sweet breakfast for myself! On Sunday morning I hit Studio City Farmers Markets (open rain, shine or pandemic!) and found a giant pink grapefruit for $1.50 — what a steal! I took her home and made a delicious and simple breakfast alongside Greek yogurt and honey. The directions are simple: Just slice the grapefruit in half, sprinkle a few teaspoons (or as desired) of brown sugar or cinnamon, and place the fruit on tin foil before placing in the broiler for about 3 minutes. I do like mine with an extra dark glaze, so I put it in for a bit longer.

If you are looking for new fruit to add to your winter breakfast, I hope you give this a try!

When I decided it was zen I sought, I figured I should travel to its very birthplace: India. Though the idea of traveling in India initially felt more exciting than relaxing, I found the contrast between the bustling activity outside and the quiet reflection of my yoga practice to be an intoxicating combination.
