Arrival/Check-In: Arriving late in the afternoon, we drove into the courtyard-style front entrance of the Waldorf Astoria in the Buckhead section of Atlanta. Unforgettable luxury and irresistible charm meet at this property in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Georgia’s capital, all in a setting near the best shops, dining and entertainment in the city.

Tucked away on a side street, the property enjoys a nice sense of privacy and intimacy yet sits just a few steps from one of the main thoroughfares in Buckhead. As the valet and doorman greeted us, we knew instantly this would be a special stay. Friendly faces, warm smiles and attention to detail met us at every step. The lobby exuded the same sense of privacy and intimacy as the entrance. The elegant yet subtle décor lent a true sense of feeling at home. Our experience with the front desk personnel proved an extension of the warm welcome we received as we drove in: Southern charm at its best.

Guest Quarters: Walking into my room, I entered a nicely appointed foyer which opened to the right to the guest suite with its welcoming sitting area and spacious work desk. Floor-to-ceiling windows provided a wonderful view of the Buckhead skyline. To the left of the foyer a hallway led to the massive and spectacular bathroom. The hallway separating the guest suite and the bathroom featured a large closet on one end and a fully stocked minibar on the other. The minibar offered a wide variety of top-shelf spirits and snacks as well as a coffee station any barista would be proud of. The master bathroom was almost as large as the guest suite, with a double vanity, a large soaking tub next to a large window (also with great views of the skyline) and an expansive separate shower stall. A private water closet completed the elegance of the bathroom. A flat-screen TV above the sink area added a nice touch, as did the automatic retracting shades by the tub.

Services/Amenities: Make a point to have breakfast at the on-site restaurant, The Café & Bar. The cheese grits is worth every penny and starts your day with a satisfying fullness in your belly and a smile. The indoor lap pool offered a relaxing respite from a busy day of sales calls, and the fitness room was well-equipped and roomy. I didn’t have the time to enjoy the yoga studio or the sauna and steam room but will on my next visit.

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

◆ You cannot beat the location of this hotel, in the heart of Buckhead within walking distance of the finest restaurants, shops and entertainment in Atlanta.

◆ Take advantage of the house car, which chauffeurs guests in a luxurious Mercedes sedan to any point within three miles of the hotel (everything in Buckhead). Easy pick-up and drop- off was just a phone call away.

◆ The separation between the guest suite and large bathroom gave the feel of a spacious luxury apartment, providing a sense of privacy while maintaining connection to all rooms.

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
