Bethesda Fountain is home to the Angel of the Waters, representative of the angel in the biblical Gospel of John, which blessed the Pool of Bethesda. The statue celebrates the transport of fresh water to New York City in the mid-1800s, and was the only statue in the park specially commissioned.
