Summer’s not over, and these five great festivals provide plenty of reasons to fill the gas tank, buy a plane ticket or book a cruise to one of the following destinations:

Heading to New Orleans? Lucky you. Until Sept. 15, the COOLinary festival continues. It’s the 20th anniversary of this fun, citywide food event, with a great selection of participating local restaurants that include 3rd Block Dept Kitchen + Bar, Annunciation Restaurant, Birdy’s Behind The Bower, Deanie’s Sea Food Kitchen, Gris-Gris, Lula Restaurant Distillery, New Orleans Creole Cookery, Red Fish Grill, and Poydras & Peters. Locations range from the Arts/Warehouse/Convention District to the Central Business District/Downtown area and French Quarter.

Head to Austria’s capital Sept. 20–22 for Art Vienna. Art is the focus, with exhibitions and work from Austria and prestigious global artists and galleries from around the world. It’s all on fabulous display at Schönbrunn Palace and its 18th-century orangery, where illustrious composers including Mozart and Sallieri once performed.

In Scotland, September means fun with a variety of events. Through Sept. 8 in Largs, Largs Viking Festival celebrates Viking heritage and the long-ago Battle of Largs, which took place in 1263 and is commemorated today with a reenactment and skirmish. Enjoy live entertainment and pipe bands, workshops, food and crafts, a Viking and Scots village, and the Festival of Fire. On Sept. 6 and 7, the Spirit of Speyside Distilled: Food & Drink 2024 festival offers the chance to sample the region’s spirits and meet master distillers at Elgin Town Hall.

It’s a wild and wooly world in Zermatt, Switzerland, on Sept. 7 and 8 when the Shepherd’s Festival and Wolli’s Birthday gets underway. Visitors are invited to participate in a weekend of celebrations timed around the birthday of the city’s beloved mascot sheep. Events include the selection of Zermatt’s most beautiful black-nosed sheep, plus music, food and fun.

With a reputation for excess, the multibillion-dollar cruising industry pushes the limits. Each year brings bigger, more extravagant ships, and as ships continue to grow, so do bookings. According to a 2024 Cruise Lines International Association report, passenger volume in 2023 reached 32 million, a 7 percent increase from 2019. It anticipates a 10 percent increase over the next four years.

Explore City and Shore on Canada’s Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island lies off Canada’s east coast; and although connected to neighboring Nova Scotia by a bridge since 1997, it retains the remote feel of an island. Its capital of Charlottetown is a popular stop for Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Silversea, Seabourn and other cruise lines that bring passengers right into the heart of the small city.

The Somerset on Grace Bay Review

If you’re taking a large family getaway or a “friendcation,” regular hotel rooms might not cut it. Even if you book adjoining rooms or a more spacious suite, accommodations most likely still won’t have all of the amenities to make your stay as comfortable as it could be. But if your brood happens to be planning a beach getaway to Turks & Caicos, The Somerset on Grace Bay can provide an inviting oceanside home away from home.
