The Swedish West Coast city of Göteborg (a.k.a. Gothenburg) is poised to become a top destination for food enthusiasts this summer, offering an array of restaurants, cafés and festivals that blend global flavors with Swedish innovation.
Göteborg and the nearby Swedish West Coast buzz with the opening of more than 20 new restaurants, bars and cafés this year. The iconic Feskekörka (translated as “fish church”) has reopened, and Gamlestaden, Göteborg’s historic Old City founded in 1493, are must-visit culinary destinations. Trendy wine bars are popping up across the city, while pizza and pasta venues continue to attract locals and visitors throughout the city. Here’s a list of the 2024 most-anticipated newcomers and the best culinary events on the horizon.
The newly renovated Feskekörka reopened after a four-year renovation project. There are several different fish counters, four new restaurants and bars within the building, and Swedish and international guest chef appearances in the various kitchens.
Opened in late 2023, new enough to make the list, Wine Mechanics is the city’s first urban winery with self-produced wine. The Nordic region’s first urban winery opened in the Gamlestaden district in 2018, and wine has been produced there with sustainable grapes sourced from Germany and France, among other countries. This new wine bar is located in the historic market hall called Stora Saluhallen.
Lorensbergs Fisk & Bar’s menu includes classics such as seafood soup, mussels, half special à la mer and shrimp sandwiches. Opened in early 2024, visitors can also buy fresh fish or a takeaway lunch from the restaurant’s own well-stocked fish shop, Lorensbergs Fiskaffär.
Ceno Brasserie opened in April with award-winning Michelin-starred chef Stefan Karlsson at the new World of Volvo venue. Lunch and dinner are served in a building boasting spectacular architecture.
Bar el Guiri is a Spanish restaurant featuring a 50-foot-long wine and pintxos bar, a classic restaurant area with an open kitchen, and a héladeria (ice-cream parlor) serving ice cream and churros. Upstairs is a lounge with shuffleboard and boules courts.
Wazo opened this spring as one of Sweden’s smallest wine bars. The venue specializes in artisan wines without additives, and has a menu focusing on cheese and bread. Wazo is run by the same family as the popular Café Oizo.
Posto, opened in spring 2024, is an Italian restaurant created by restaurateur and foodie Phillipe Cohen, who already operates a branch with the same concept in Stockholm. The restaurant sits just a stone’s throw from the main boulevard Avenyn.
Gothenburg Street Food Festival, Aug. 29–Sept. 1, is Sweden’s largest street food festival. The festival stretches between Basargatan and Kungstorget Square, and includes the Swedish street food and sweet food championships, with a prize-giving ceremony on Kungstorget square.
The Sausage Festival, Sept. 27–28, draws thousands of sausage lovers every year with its unique range of sausages, accompaniments and drinks. The third edition of the Sausage Festival will take place in Göteborg, this year at Göteborg Film Studios, at Polstjärnegatan 10, with 40–50 exhibitors.

Nov 21, 2024Immerse in an Invigorating Thermal Journey at Scandinave Spa Whistler
The glittering green pines and burst of jasmine lake beyond almost made me forget about the aches in my legs that slowly developed after the promised hour-long hike ran into the third hour. And, oh, there were my hips, showing up to remind me I was no longer in my 20s. I didn’t mind, though, because the vision that surrounded me during our guided walk through Garibaldi Park to Cheakamus Lake in Whistler, British Columbia, with Mountain Skills Academy and Adventures proved worthy of a thousand postcards.

Nov 19, 2024Explore the Beguiling Towns of Sicily’s Val di Noto
Best known to tourists for the boisterous chaos of Palermo, the views of Mount Etna from idyllic Taormina, and for that capricious volcano itself, Sicily has far more to draw travelers. In Sicily’s southeast corner, one region encapsulates the Sicilian spirit that has seen it through conquest and natural disasters, a region less well-known to tourists but one of the island’s most beautiful and fascinating.
