The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) granted American Airlines’ request to approve a reciprocal codeshare agreement with Hainan Airlines of the People’s Republic of China.
With this approval, Hainan will be able to display the AA designator code on its flights between the U.S. and China (currently Seattle-Beijing) and on its flights within China beyond American’s Beijing and Shanghai gateways. In addition, American may now display the HU code on its flights between the U.S. and China (currently Chicago-Beijing, Chicago-Shanghai and Los Angeles-Shanghai) and on flights operated by American within the U.S. beyond Hainan’s Seattle gateway.
“This decision comes after Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping appeared at the White House on Tuesday with President Barack Obama, who stressed that the U.S. is focused on building a better economic and strategic relationship between the two nations,” said Will Ris, American’s senior vice president of government affairs.
