As the United Kingdom decides whether or not to leave the European Union, Travelzoo is compiling data on how the possible secession will harm the nation’s tourism industry. After polling European travelers, many — particularly those from Germany, Italy, Spain and France — say they would feel the need to choose a destination other than the United Kingdom for their upcoming travel, should the country leave the European Union. Many also worry the withdrawal would cause travel prices to the United Kingdom to increase substantially. On the reverse side, respondents from European countries felt it would be entirely justifiable to charge British travelers extra travel taxes when visiting the European continent. When British nationals were polled, while some thought a secession would possibly make the United Kingdom a safer vacation destination, others were also worried about the possibility of higher travel costs, particularly for travel insurance and mobile roaming. Another concern was pollution, as British beaches and other natural attractions would no longer receive protection under strict EU regulations. “Our neighbors in Europe clearly don’t want the United Kingdom to leave the European Union, and the impact of this sentiment could translate into a significant drop in bookings to the UK from the largest European countries,” said Joel Brandon-Bravo, managing director, United Kingdom, Travelzoo. “When combined with a potential loss of more than 10 percent of visitors from North America, as indicated in our research, it’s clear that Brexit could be very bad news for the UK’s domestic tourism industry. Similarly, UK consumers looking to travel abroad also have concerns about Brexit impacting the outbound tourism industry.” Other data compiled points to a possible loss of as much as £4.1 billion per year for the UK tourism industry.
