Canada may not be thought of for its cuisine, but look closely and you’re sure to find a handful of dishes worth venturing north for.
Poutine
This fantastic dish may not always look as appetizing as it is, but there’s a reason this one has started to creep south across the border into U.S. restaurants. Poutine involves French fries smothered in gravy and topped with cheese curds for one indulgent, cholesterol-laden treat. Poutine is popular around the country, and you can even find it at fast food restaurants.
Nanaimo Bars
Inspired by the British Columbian city of the same name, Nanaimo bars are no-bake creations with three layers: a base of graham crackers or nuts, custard and chocolate. Occasional twists involve icing or other flavorings like peanut butter and maple. The city of Nanaimo even has a Nanaimo bar trail dedicated to helping you eat your weight in these desserts.
Montreal Smoked Meat
The Canadian answer to pastrami, this sandwich filling consists entirely of brisket marinated for a long time and with a ton of peppercorn. It’s shaved thin and features bold, smoky flavors excellent on a sandwich. Schwartz’s Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen is perhaps the best place to try it.
