My check-in at Hotel Clio, a Marriott Bonvoy Collection hotel in Denver, was smooth and pleasant. The check-in desk faces the entrance, so staff members are immediately aware of guest arrivals. I was offered a welcome beverage, and given a round electronic key to access my room.

The reservation area itself is backdropped by a large digital wall art display that picks up on the hotel’s Gold Rush-era theme, appropriate to Colorado’s history. This theme also plays out in random veins of gold running through the stone floor and a large textile work on one wall of the entrance lobby meant to represent clothing from the days when settlers and fortune seekers filled the then-young city. The lobby is adjacent to a social gathering area where the walls are fitted with “tequila lockers.” It’s here where repeat guests are invited to display private bottles of tequila, safely stashed to enjoy on their next visit.

Denver, like many large cosmopolitan cities, is really a collection of neighborhoods and districts, and Hotel Clio is in Cherry Creek, one of my favorite parts of the city. The newly relaunched hotel occupies the same structure as the former JW Marriott Denver Cherry Creek, with 199 guestrooms and five suites, including one presidential suite. My Mountain View King room provided expansive views of the craggy peaks of the Rocky Mountains and had a wide day bed/lounger positioned in front of an enormous, soundproof window. A personal preference for me is a window that actually opens, and this one did, allowing me to replace air-conditioning with fresh, cool mountain air.

The room also featured a wide desk with good lighting, adequate charging ports and a comfortable swivel chair. The king-sized bed with its pillowtop mattress was more than comfortable. My large marble bathroom included both a deep-soaking tub and separate, generously proportioned shower. Room amenities included two thick robes, a lighted make-up mirror in the bathroom, 65-inch television with premium movie channels and Netflix, Lavazza coffee machine and a selection of teas, a safe, an iron and ironing board, an honor bar, and 24-hour room service.

The WiFi service was excellent and consistent in my room and throughout the property. Daily perks included complimentary espresso and afternoon refreshments, still and sparkling water options on every floor and valet dry-cleaning. One of the things I most appreciated was the focus on wellness. Along with a 24-hour fitness center with a hydro rower and Peloton bikes, the hotel partners with a wide range of local wellness providers a short walk from the front door. The concierge service includes recommendations for local walking, cycling and running trails.

And, while Cherry Creek has no shortage of dining options, the hotel’s own Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge was a highlight for me. High on mountain ambience, the tables are arranged around a long, open stone firepit. Along with a menu of Pan-Latin cuisine with both South American- and Japanese-inspired flavors and combinations, there’s also a fresh ceviche bar. On weekends, diners can enjoy bottomless brunch. Every day at 3:30 p.m., guests can take part in the hotel’s Epicurean Moments in Toro Lounge. Depending on the day, there’s a Tequila Talk, Tableside Guacamole with Chef, Exploring Spanish Wines or a Ceviche Class.

The hotel sits smack in the action of downtown Denver’s trendy Cherry Creek district next to shopping, nightlife, art galleries, cafés and restaurants. The Relevant Gallery is right next door. The property is also ideally located for business and leisure travelers, with an on-site event planning team and lots of meeting space. Even more, the hotel’s focus on holistic well-being includes partnerships with neighborhood providers including fitness and yoga studios, spas, a vitamin infusion bar, CYL Sauna Studio and VIVE Float Studio.

Escape to Tahiti for a Captivating Island-Hopping Cruise

The 118 islands of French Polynesia reveal themselves layer by fascinating layer, with the spirit of mana (vital force) linking them all the way from Tahiti to the remote reaches of the Marquesas. This is part of the world best savored on a journey that dives as deep into culture as natural beauty, both above and below the water’s surface. A cruise makes it easy to cover a lot of ground while unpacking just once (and sneaking in some work done in comfort, too, during at-sea days). And cruising offers particular appeal within this semi-autonomous French territory sprawling across nearly 2 million square miles of ocean and covering five archipelagos.
