Adelaide, Australia, may be as “ever-lovin'” as the girlfriend Frank Sinatra sings about in Guys and Dolls, but unlike her, you’re not “takin’ a chance” if you choose to stay in the city’s Hilton. A modern tower surrounded by charming traditional courthouses, the hotel is solidly comfortable and convenient. Located almost exactly in the center of the city’s downtown grid, five miles from the airport, it overlooks the elegant green nucleus that is Victoria Square. Opposite the front door, beside the taxi stand, there’s a stop for the trolley that takes guests anywhere across town for free.
Crocodile Dundee-style bellmen uniformed as Bush cattle wranglers carry your luggage up the stairs to the soothing white marble lobby, where efficient staff receptionists welcome you; even early check-ins are apt to be whisked right up to comfortable rooms with king-sized beds, wide-screen televisions, plenty of drawers and workspace, generous bathrooms with both tub and shower, and windows (that open!) overlooking the Square. Room service is available all day, every day, and the outdoor pool on the first-floor terrace and the fitness room stay open until 10 p.m., as well as the sauna and Jacuzzi.
WiFi is free in the lobby lounge, fitted with comfortable pink and lavender suede chairs and big leather banquettes. Across the lobby, the open-plan Brasserie serves a generous breakfast with made-to-order omelets and pancakes and a delicious layered parfait of honey, yogurt and dried fruits. Lunch and dinner menus focus on Australian specialties and the Collins Bar features more than 30 bespoke cocktails concocted from the likes of chocolate bitters, maple syrup and bacon-washed bourbon served to patrons perched on stools at the open-air wall overlooking the Square. For guests in premium upper floors, the executive lounge serves complimentary breakfast, tea and cocktails in a room with views toward nearby wine country.
The concierge can arrange wine country tours to the Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Barossa, or guests can sample regional wines in the nearby National Wine Center or in shops right behind the hotel in the charming busy arcades of the traditional Victoria Market. You may want to take in an event at the landmark Her Majesty’s Theatre down the block, or there’s apt to be a festival set up in right out front in Victoria Square. Chances are you’ll settle in and never want to leave.
